What Does a Commissioner Do?

County commissioners are responsible for the services and decisions that directly affect everyday life in Otter Tail County. Their responsibilities include:

  • Setting the county budget and property tax levy.

  • Maintaining county roads and bridges.

  • Supporting all aspects of public safety and emergency management.

  • Providing oversight of county departments and taxpayer dollars.

  • Protecting our lakes, county parks, and other natural resources.

County commissioners do not control local schools, set school curriculum, or make decisions for cities, townships, or the state. Their responsibility is to focus on county government and serve the taxpayers of Otter Tail County.
